General: Biennial herb from a branched taproot; stems ascending to erect, several, branched, smooth, 30-70 cm tall.
Leaves: Basal leaves 3-lobed above the midpoint of the blade, smooth; stem leaves alternate, 3- to 7-lobed into narrow segments, smooth, the lowest pair lobed again and minutely toothed.
Flowers: Inflorescence a spike-like raceme with short-stalked flowers; petals 6, yellowish to greenish-yellow, 2-5 mm long, deeply 3-lobed, the lobes equally linear or the central lobe much narrower and shorter than the outer ones; sepals 6, linear, about 1 mm long; stamens 15-25.
Fruits: Capsules, oblong, 6-8 mm long; seeds pear-shaped, 1.5-1.7 mm long, black, smooth, shiny.
